Let’s Talk Indianola – Summer Nights Live

A pair of special performers are coming to Pella on Saturday, July 1st, and will take part in festivities related to Independence Day in the Tulip City. American Legion Post 89 Commander David Robbins says the Iowa Veterans Band will start festivities on the Tulip Toren that afternoon at 2 p.m., followed by the 34th Army Band based out of Fairfield. Robbins says both will bring unique performances and a wide range of music to the stage. The appearance of both military bands was the main reason why the City of Pella ultimately decided to move festivities for Independence Day from July 4th to the Saturday before. Expand Your World will be a program offered by the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Program. The day camp will be from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. The program is for students in kindergarten through third grade. Grades are based on the one they just completed in the Spring of 2023.

Habitat for Humanity of Marion County is building a Knoxville family a new home at 502 West Rock Island Street. Project Manager Jay Weldon tells KNIA/KRLS News they are nearing the end of the project with around five weeks to go. The Knoxville High School Construction Trades Class worked four days a week on the new home.

The Knoxville Chamber of Commerce will be holding a ribbon cutting ceremony for Terrace View housing by Kading Properties. The event is set for Wednesday, June 14 at 3 p.m. Terrace View by Kading Properties is building two and three bedroom townhomes east of Wal-Mart in Knoxville at 1601 Ellis Lane.

Let’s Talk Pella – Military Bands Coming to Pella Independence Day

Funeral services will be held for Carl D. Horman age 92 of Pella on Tuesday, June 13th at 10:30am at the Trinity Reformed Church in Pella. Burial will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery in Pella. Visitation will begin after 2:00pm Monday at the Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home where the family will be present Monday from 4:00-6:00pm. Memorial contributions are preferred for Gideon’s International or the Hospice of Pella Comfort House. Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

The Indianola City Council discussed parking on the downtown square during their work session Monday, which included both short-term and long-term solutions. City Manager Ben Reeves tells KNIA News the city is committed to supporting local businesses on the square, and in the short-term will have signs on the square and raise awareness about the need for open spots on the square. Reeves said the potential long-term options involve a parking time-limit enforcement.

The annual Lake Red Balloonfest FUNdraiser 5K/10K Run returns this summer to support local cross country teams. The tradition returns on Saturday, July 8th at North Overlook Beach at 8 a.m. The event supports the Knoxville, Pella, and Pella Christian Cross Country Teams. Race day walk-ins are welcome. Race to Support Area High School Cross Country Teams Returns

Kate Minette of the Storm swimming and diving team has been named the 2022-23 SC ESPY Female Record-Breaking Performer of the Year. Her record-breaking season was highlighted by becoming the first Storm swimmer to go under 25 seconds in the 50 freestyle, clocking a 24.57 at the Pioneer Classic to break Dana Kuiken’s record of 25.01 set in February 2004. She also lowered her 100 freestyle record on two occasions and swam the anchor leg of the 200 freestyle relay which broke the oldest school record in the book, a 1:43.85 from February 2001.

Ciara Heffron was brilliant in the circle and the Knoxville Softball Squad hit three home runs to down class 3A #9 Albia on Wednesday night 4-0 as heard on 95.3 KNIA. Knoxville’s first big blow was the Brittany Bacorn bomb to left-center field to make it 1-0 in the 2nd inning. Hannah Dunkin also hit a shot to left-center on a two run homer to make it 3-0 in the 4th, and Heffron finished off the scoring depositing a solo shot in nearly the same spot as Bacorn and Dunkin. Heffron also owned the circle allowing three hits and mowing down 11 Blue Demons. Coach Carla Smith told KNIA/KRLS Sports Heffron was able to adjust to the strike zone.

The Pella City Council will hold a public hearing at their meeting this evening for construction bids to begin the process of converting overhead power lines underground along Idaho Drive. The council will also accept final improvements for the 250th Avenue road reconstruction project, consider a resolution to partner with Pella Historical Society for the upgrades to the downtown speaker system, and review a special event permit for the Pella All Original Music Showcase. During policy and planning following regular business, the council will discuss health and dental plan premiums for the upcoming fiscal year and have a review of the city’s peddler permit policies. The Pella City Council meeting begins at 6 p.m. this evening in the Pella Public Safety Complex and can be listened to online here.
