Pella Track Club Youth Meet Benefits Pella Food Shelf

The annual Thursdays in Pella events hosted by the PACE Alliance return to Central Park this evening. The first theme is “Jam with the Fam,” which is traditionally the lead off to the summer’s festivities. This evening’s festival starts at 6 p.m. and includes the annual bike rodeo, yard games hosted by several organizations and businesses, various food vendors, and entertainment by The Dans Co, Magician TJ Regul, and the Pella City Band concluding activities at 8 p.m. The KNIA/KRLS Lil’ Big Red Radio is broadcasting weekly from Thursdays in Pella this summer.

Thursdays in Pella Events Return Tonight

Tonight is the annual Indianola Public Library Summer Bash, as the community is welcomed to the library parking lot to celebrate the return of warmer weather and the beginning of summer activities. Adult Services Librarian Jacy West tells KNIA News food trucks, ice cream, lawn games, face painting, and giant bouncy houses will be in the library parking lot, with air conditioning inside the library and activities such as board games and kids toys available. West said everyone is invited to come and celebrate with library and city staff. The Kick Off Summer event is from 6-8pm.

Indianola Library Summer Bash Tonight

Indianola Parks and Rec is hosting a program highlighting stories from Iowa’s veterans in their next installment of their Afternoon Adventures series this afternoon. Becky Lane with Indianola Parks and Rec tells KNIA News Sara Maniscalco Robinson, and Iowa National Guard Broadcast Journalist since 1997, will discuss the preserved stories of Iowa’s veterans, including accounts of the day Pearl Harbor was bombed, the morning the Twin Towers were attacked, and what it was like to be a woman in the military in WWII among many others. The Afternoon Adventure Speaker Series will be at 2pm at the Indianola Activity Center, and is free to the public. The program is funded by Humanities Iowa, a private, non-profit state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Afternoon Adventures Series Features Iowa’s Veterans

The Indianola American Legion Post 165 hosted the annual Memorial Day Parade Monday, which included a service and dedication for the new Junior Edwards Statue at the IOOF Cemetery. Sergeant First Class Junior Edwards was an Indianola resident who was awarded a Medal of Honor for his actions during the Korean War, the only Iowa resident to do so. Joe Moody with the American Legion tells KNIA News he wants people to remember the meaning of Memorial Day, which is a day to honor the service members who lost their lives while in the service of their country. The Twin Cedars Softball Squad started slow, but finished fast as the Sabers took down Seymour in a come-from-behind 4-3 decision in eight innings. Jillian French surrendered three runs in the top of the 1st inning, but settled down to shut down the Warriors the rest of the way, striking out 13. Meanwhile, the Sabers offense caught on as Rylee Dunkin, Kisha Reed, Kennedi Ford, and Kellie Stevenson had two hits each with Dunkin stealing three bases. It was Ford who got the game winner as she singled to right with French on 1st base. As the Seymour right fielder fumbled the ball, French was able to score the walk off run. The Sabers host Cardinal tonight.

Summer reading programs begin at the Pella Public Library after classes at local schools have now dismissed. Youth Services Librarian Katie Dreyer says reading challenges for prizes will return, with digital options for reading logs. Funeral services for Virgil W. Boertje, 91, of Pella, will be held Friday, June 2nd at 10:30 am at First Church in Pella. Interment with military honors will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Pella. The #4 Pella girls soccer team defeated the 5th seeded ADM Tigers 1-0 Wednesday afternoon at the Class 2A state soccer tournament. While the teams played to a draw for most of the first half, older sister Mia had a long-range assist to younger sister Abby with :19 before the halftime break. It was the only goal the Dutch defense needed. Haley Van Houweling finished with 14 saves. Pella next takes on #1 Waverly-Shell Rock this Friday at 12:30 p.m.; pregame starts at high noon on 92.1 KRLS.

The Indianola Community Youth Foundation was awarded an $18,000 grant from Casey’s General Store that will be donated to the Indianola Middle School. ICYF Executive Director Taylor Nehring tells KNIA News she tries to keep her ear to the ground on what is needed in the schools or other organizations, and saw a need in the IM P.E. Department.

A trio of Pella spring sports teams are in their respective state tournaments this week. The Pella girls tennis team is in the final four of Class 1A today, seeking another upset against #1 Waterloo Columbus, while the top ranked Dutch boys start their quarterfinals journey in Iowa City Wednesday as the No. 1 seed against Ballard. This is after individual success for both: Emily Blom placed 4th in the 1A singles tournament this past Friday and Saturday; Jack Briggs and Joshua Roozeboom won the state doubles title earlier last week. In Des Moines, the #4 in 2A Pella girls soccer team is making their 14th ever state tournament appearance, starting against 5th seeded ADM. That match can be heard on 92.1 KRLS, with pregame at 12:15 p.m.

Pella Spring Sports Wrap Up Seasons at State This Week

The 2023 season ended with a trophy for the Pella girls tennis team. Pella placed 4th during Tuesday’s semifinals and finals matches, falling 5-0 to eventual champions Waterloo Columbus and in a hard-fought back and forth with Central DeWitt 5-4, which included two third-set tiebreakers the Dutch ended up losing — including the final doubles match with the 3rd place trophy on the line. Wins for Pella came from Emily Blom, Alloree Else, and Bryn Higginbotham in singles, and Claire Smock fell in one of the two tiebreakers. Mallory Westerkamp and Bryn Higginbotham were able to win the fourth match for Pella, but the match came down to #1 singles after Smock/Blom fell in their doubles match. Else and Lily VanDusseldorp held a slim lead in the first set, but couldn’t manage to close it out, losing 5-7. The second set was a decisive 6-3 victory for the Dutch. With all other matches finished, the meet was decided in a match tiebreak that went the way of the Sabers.

The Indianola High School softball team participated in the annual “Strike Out Cancer” game against rival Southeast Polk last week, a longstanding tradition to raise funds, awareness, and to support those around the programs who have been affected by cancer. Head coach Stacy Evans tells KNIA News the annual game has honored many former players and coaches who have been affected by cancer, and presents an opportunity to come together as a community.
