Let’s Talk Pella – Memorial Day

The already-launched Pella Farmers Market and the upcoming Thursdays in Pella in June and July will have central park in Pella busy with residents and visitors this summer. Mary Mansfield and Trisha Klok with the PACE Alliance are looking forward to the return of weekly activities downtown, which will be held in conjunction with ongoing Farmers Market activities on the east side of the square. The first Thursdays in Pella of the summer is Thursday, starting at 6 p.m., with the theme of “Jam with the Fam.” The KNIA/KRLS Lil’ Big Red Radio is broadcasting every Thursday from Pella in June and July.

The Pleasantville Pig Out is scheduled to be held Saturday in downtown Pleasantville,. Pleasantville City Deputy Clerk, April Schrader, tells KNIA/KRLS News, the big event has been in existence for over 10 years. The event includes a free will donation luncheon, kids activities, a bags tournament, a cooking contest, a band “Guilty by Association,” and an Afterparty.

The Indianola Chamber of Commerce annual Golf Classic is on July 12th, with all chamber members and those in the community invited to participate. The event is returning to a shotgun start, and Chamber President and CEO Amanda Zwanziger tells KNIA News sponsorship opportunities are now available to showcase your business, and are also available for a three-year commitment to lock in the current rates. The event also includes a silent auction, which includes a week-stay in Las Vegas and an Iowa Hawkeye VIP Package among others. The event is July 12th at the Indianola Golf and Country Club. Indianola Chamber of Commerce Golf Classic Coming in July

The Warren County Fair begins July 26th, featuring four nights of grandstand events that includes a pair of concerts. Fair Director Jo Reynolds tells KNIA News the grandstand events include Figure 8 Races, concerts by Easton Corbin and Sawyer Brown, a demolition derby, and grain truck races. Independence Village of Pella celebrated a big day for one of its memory care residents, John, and helped fulfill his dream of piloting an airplane again. Flying was a part of John’s everyday life. He worked for Pittsburg-Des Moines Steel as a welder, constructing large water towers nationwide. To make traveling easier to worksites and be able to come home on the weekends, John purchased a 1946 Cessna 140 tail-dragged airplane. He also used the plane to transport his wife to doctor appointments and treat his children to playful rides with loops and rolls.

Independence Village of Pella Resident Takes to the Sky

The Indianola Public Library is continuing their teen hangouts program over the summer that includes multiple new activities. Kelsey McFarland with the library tells KNIA News they will have bleach art for white tee-shirts, and DIY boba tea to create, all taking place on Wednesday’s throughout the summer. McFarland also said the classic teen events such as the NERF Attack, glow karaoke, and ice cream and paint classes will all continue to take place. To listen to the full interview, click below.

Summer reading programs begin at the Pella Public Library after classes at local schools have now dismissed. Youth Services Librarian Katie Dreyer says reading challenges for prizes will return, with digital options for reading logs. Additionally, programs and entertainment will be available for children to participate in beginning June 1st. Find full details about the Pella Public Library Summer Reading Program here. Summer Reading Program Returning at Pella Public Library

The Indianola American Legion Post 165 hosted the annual Memorial Day Parade Monday, which included a service and dedication for the new Junior Edwards Statue at the IOOF Cemetery. Sergeant First Class Junior Edwards was an Indianola resident who was awarded a Medal of Honor for his actions during the Korean War, the only Iowa resident to do so. Joe Moody with the American Legion tells KNIA News he wants people to remember the meaning of Memorial Day, which is a day to honor the service members who lost their lives while in the service of their country. A trio of Pella spring sports teams are in their respective state tournaments this week. The Pella girls tennis team is in the final four of Class 1A today, seeking another upset against #1 Waterloo Columbus, while the top ranked Dutch boys tennis squad starts their quarterfinals journey in Iowa City Wednesday as the No. 1 seed against Ballard. In Des Moines, the #4 in 2A Pella girls soccer team is making their 14th ever state tournament appearance, starting against 5th seeded ADM Wednesday. That match can be heard on 92.1 KRLS, with pregame at 12:15 p.m.

The Marion County Conservation Department is hosting a Building Better Birders and Citizen Scientists Workshop at the Cordova Park office building, 1378 Highway G28, Otley. For the past two years, Kelly McKay, along with Clinton County Conservation and Nahant Marsh Education Center have been presenting a program designed to create a citizenry with better bird identification skills and to promote participants getting involved with local citizen science projects.

Washington State Bank has announced the opening of their lending office in Pella. A Grand Opening celebration will be held on Wednesday, May 31st, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at 703 Main St in Pella. The PACE Alliance will be joining the group at 4:00 PM for an official ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The Indianola High School softball team participated in the annual “Strike Out Cancer” game against rival Southeast Polk last week, a longstanding tradition to raise funds, awareness, and to support those around the programs who have been affected by cancer. Head coach Stacy Evans tells KNIA News the annual game has honored many former players and coaches who have been affected by cancer, and presents an opportunity to come together as a community.

Indianola Softball Hosts Strike Out Cancer Game

The Twin Cedars Softball Squad started slow, but finished fast as the Sabers took down Seymour in a come-from-behind 4-3 decision in eight innings. Jillian French surrendered three runs in the top of the 1st inning, but settled down to shut down the Warriors the rest of the way, striking out 13. Meanwhile, the Sabers offense caught on as Rylee Dunkin, Kisha Reed, Kennedi Ford, and Kellie Stevenson had two hits each with Dunkin stealing three bases. It was Ford who got the game winner as she singled to right with French on 1st base. As the Seymour right fielder fumbled the ball, French was able to score the walk off run. The Sabers host Cardinal tonight.

The Indianola softball team was up 2-1 on Ballard in a non-conference game that was postponed due to weather in the fifth inning. The Indians fell behind 1-0 to the Bombers, but got runs back when Izzy Sloan and Taylor Adamson scored to get to the final tally, while Izzie Benge was in the circle giving up just a couple of hits.

The annual Memorial Day ceremony in Pella returned Sunday afternoon. VFW Post 5242 and American Legion Post 89 co-hosted the event that includes a tribute to veterans who have died in the past year, a celebration of those in attendance who served, music, and other ceremonial procedures, including the playing of taps following a rifle salute. State Representative Barb Kniff McCulla was the guest speaker.

Funeral services for Marilyn Charline Miller, 83, of Knoxville, will be held Friday, June 2, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Knoxville. Interment will be at the Graceland Cemetery following the service. Family will receive friends on Thursday June 1st from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Knoxville. Memorials may be made in care of Marilyn’s family to be used for the Music Therapy Program at Grand Meadows Luther Manor, where she had resided the last few years.

Memorial services for Rosalee (Freel) De Haai age 91, of Pleasantville is being planned for a later date at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Pleasantville. Williams Funeral Home in Knoxville, is in charge of arrangements.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Michael D. Parker age 51, of Melcher-Dallas on Saturday, June 3rd from 12:00-4:00pm at the Melcher-Dallas Community Center. Memorials may be made in care of the family.

The Wildcats struck first with a run in the first, but Indianola answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to lead 2-1 after the first. Both teams scored again in the second with the Indians leading 3-2, before a wild third inning included the Wildcats scoring four runs and the Indians scoring three to tie the game at six, and the offense continued in the fourth with the Indians adding two more to lead 8-6 after the fourth. The Wildcats earned another run back in the sixth, but the Indians held on to win the contest 8-7 to win their third straight game.

Indianola Baseball Holds off Carlisle in Warren County Clash

A 33-year-old man from Melcher-Dallas was charged with two felonies and a serious misdemeanor from an incident that took place Sunday in Knoxville. James Orville Morris, Jr., was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance, Third or Subsequent Offense; and Failure to Affix Drug Stamp, both felonies along with a charge of Operating While Under the Influence, 1st Offense, a serious misdemeanor.

Funeral services for Virgil W. Boertje, 91, of Pella, will be held Friday, June 2nd at 10:30 am at First Church in Pella. Interment with military honors will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Pella. Visitation will begin Thursday after 2:00 pm at First Church where the family will be present from 4-6 pm. Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
