Storm Francine: State of emergency declared for Lafayette

LAFAYETTE, La. ( KLFY )– Ahead of Tropical Storm Francine, Lafayette Mayor-President Monique Boulet issued a state of emergency on Monday.

With Lafayette Parish under threat of receiving possible damage, Mayor-President Boulet is informing the public on what steps they can take ahead of time to be prepared.

She said plans and preparations are in place before, during, and after Tropical Storm Francine makes landfall.

“We did declare a state of emergency for the entire parish. This helps us work with the state and federal government at a higher level. It helps us set procurement in place to set contractors up now before the storm so that we can have the support we need regardless of what we need after the storm,” she said.

Although Lafayette Parish is under a state of emergency, there is not a mandatory evacuation as of now. However, citizens are encouraged to have evacuation plans in place.

Lafayette Parish Sheriff Mark Garber says law enforcement has rescue functions in place if needed and urges people to follow instructions for safety purposes.

Sheriff Garber said, “law enforcement is ready and prepared for this upcoming storm.”

Boulet encourages the public to restock emergency preparedness kits by including batteries, flashlights, cash, and first aid supplies. Ensure cars are in working condition with a full tank of gas and secure loose items around your property.

Lafayette will have four sandbag locations open and accessible at:

• 400 Dugger Rd.
• Picard Park at 130 Park Ln.
• Brown Park at 1234 E. Pon De Mouton Rd.
• Robicheaux Center at 1919 Eraste Landry Rd.

People are asked to bring a shovel and manpower. Bags will be provided.

Also, shelter preparation with the Dupis Recreation Center at Brown Park will be open Tuesday at 4 p.m. where bedding, food, and water are included.
