IBERIA PARISH, La. ( KLFY ) — In Iberia Parish, hurricane preparedness has been underway since before hurricane season. Parish President Larry Richard said they are as ready as they can be for Tropical Storm Francine to come through.

“We are always trying to prepare and be on top of it. So, we are ready. We don’t know what we are ready for though,” Richard said.

Every year, Iberia Parish takes hurricane preparedness seriously with hurricane preparation meetings to make sure they stay ahead of the game since it is common for storms to go through the area.

Sand for sandbags is available across the parish. I went to Delcambre to talk with people getting ready for the storm.

“We just kind of picking up everything in the town. And we got sand that came in today and sandbags to just help everybody out. That needs sandbags,” said Delcambre Street Commissioner Robert Esponge.

Delcambre High football players were filling up as well to help prevent water from getting in the school.

“I feel like I am helping Delcambre, helping the school out, trying to not make it flood,” said Delcambre High School football player Rix Robin.

Alex Larson is another student from Delcambre High. He said he is happy to help the community.

“Not much you can do about it you know. Just prepare, get everything up off the ground, everything. That’s about it,” he said.

Richard said he signed a declaration of public emergency meaning he will make the decisions to help protect the citizens of the parish in the case of an emergency.

“We’re going to do the best we can with what we have. The people of Iberia Parish can definitely count on me to keep them abreast as to what’s going on,” he said.
