Locally, the Osceola Council on Aging, through which Osceola County’s Meals on Wheels program is run, holds its March for Meals benefit 5K, which was on March 11.Wednesday, it held its annual Community Champions event, where community leaders ride along on a MOW route and drop off a day’s worth of hot and cold food to its clients, and show how it brightens the day of all involved. This year, members of the St. Cloud Police Department, Kissimmee Police Department, Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, Osceola County Commission, Rotary Club of Kissimmee West, and the Senior Resource Alliance participated.
As leaders in our community, we ask them to participate to help raise awareness for the growing number of older Americans facing hunger and isolation. These are both serious problems that have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and historic food, fuel and labor costs -- the pandemic canceled the March for Meals race and the Champions events for two years before they were able to return last year.
On a weekly basis, the Council on Aging needs volunteers to help package up meals from the Barney E. Veal Center off U.S. 192 just east of Kissimmee.
“You tell me what you can do, and I’ll find you a role,” said Wilda Belisle the Council's Senior Vice President of Nutrition.
