Memorial Day weekend is days away, but some Kirksville residents wonder if the outdoor pool at the Aquatic Center will open on schedule.
The outdoor pool suffered a water main break, but with construction going on this week, the pool is expected to be open for Memorial Day weekend.
“We were able to locate where the water loss was coming from," said Parks and Recreation Director Rodney Sadler. "It was in an unfortunate area that was hard to find. But now that we've seen where that is, once we fill the pool with water, if it continues to hold, will be on track to open the pool this Saturday.”
Sadler told KTVO News the plan is to fill the pool Thursday and see if it holds water.
If everything goes according to plan, he will reach out Friday to let KTVO know if they are officially opening on Saturday, as planned.
The leak might’ve caused some stress in the Parks and Recreation Department, but the seasonal hiring process was surprisingly smooth.
The department hired 100 workers for Summer, including 40 new lifeguards.
Sadler said there hasn’t been a bad incident at the new aquatic center in large part because of the job these lifeguards do.
“It literally is a life-or-death position because they're watching people who are swimming, and sometimes people are a little more confident in their swimming abilities and then where they're really at," Sadler said.
The Kirksville Parks and Rec Department has the American Red Cross train its new employees.
“We're hopeful that they learn good life skills or responsibility," Sadler added. "And it's a great first job for individuals to have.”
Sadler said once everything is fixed, the pool should be fine for the whole season.
We’ll have all the updates as soon as the Parks and Rec Department let us know if the installation of the new part fixed the problem.
