Fire Destroys Farina Chicken Housing Units
Around 6:30 pm on Wednesday, May 29, fire broke out at Wabash Valley Produce off of Route 37 on the south side of Farina. The chicken housing facility caught fire and was discovered around 7 pm. The fire spread to four buildings in the complex, firefighters were able to save a building next to the fire as well as keeping the fire from spreading to surrounding buildings on the premises. Marion and Fayette County Sherriff’s Deputies, Illinois State Police and Marion County ESDA worked to keep traffic under control. Employees of Wabash Valley Produce stated that there were no workers in the buildings at the time of the fire. The fire was so intense that it was picked up by Doppler radar. Wabash Valley Produce is one of the largest free-range chicken facilities in the country.
