Akron couple plans to turn former fire station into Wallhaven Hop Shop
Over a year after Fire Station No. 12 was decommissioned and replaced , a pair of Akron landlords have plans to breathe new life into the historic building. The buyers, Lana and Brendan Jeter , plan to turn the property into "a family friendly community hub," Deputy Director of Economic Development Sean Vollman said. The name of the place? The Wallhaven Hop Shop, according to documents provided to council. "It will feature an in-house taproom brewing craft soda, kombucha, and nitro coffee; a bottled beverage library, a gallery for artists, co-working space and a stage for live music and community events," Vollman told Akron City Council's Planning and Economic Development Committee on Oct. 26. The Wallhaven Hop Shop would start with a bakery and cafe offering Slavic and Eastern European baked goods before expanding to include beer and wine service and more. "Our longer-term vision includes immersive experiences, mini golf, family shows and group programming by day, with concerts, comedy, art events and private rentals adding evening activity," the document states, all while maintaining the "firehouse character." Old and New: Crafty Steere Brings Akron Classics Downtown
Like its Fairlawn and Tallmadge locations, Crafty Steere’s new downtown Akron location preserves food items Akron residents know and love. In addition to being a market, find a restaurant and bar with games when it opens in early 2027, according to its Facebook page. It’s located in the former O’Neil’s Department Store building. “I had an affinity for trying to restore some of the old glory,” says founder and owner Brian Steere. “My realization was [the downtown area] just needed more business.” The market features classic favorites that launched Crafty Steere — items like Our Bar, a rich, creamy cheese spread featuring cheddar and horseradish, and Killer Brownies, triple-layer brownies with fudge and caramel, topped with walnuts, both based on West Point Market original recipes. Also shop Pandora’s Cupcakes, and enjoy deli sandwiches and a bar with 10 beers on tap and cocktails. Stop by the restaurant for a 1/2-pound cheeseburger featuring high-quality beef from Copley’s J. Parker Cattle Co. or the house-made Johnny Romano chicken fingers. Overlooking Lock 3 Park, the upstairs area has rentable event space.
