Blood drive held in honor of Kenner boy who died in ice cream truck crash
The Blood Center is holding a blood drive in honor of a Kenner boy who died after an ice cream truck crashed into his apartment.
Javier Adrian Flores Fajardo died as a result of his injuries from the crash.
The blood drive will not only help save lives, but it will also help the Fajardo family with medical bills.
Paul Adams with the Blood Center says one blood donation can save up to three lives.
"Javier was one of several patients that needed blood that day," Adams said. "Everyday we need to collect about 250 units of blood to take care of our area patients and that only happens when the community comes out and rolls up their sleeves."
In addition to blood donations, financial donations were also being collected in an effort to help the family.
"The family lost their home, they lost their child, they’re working on burying their son now and this is an opportunity for us as a community to come together and help them," Adams said.
Joel Orellana, Javier Adrian's uncle says the family is deeply appreciative to have the communities support and says impact is their purpose.
"Its just so lovely," Orellana said. "We love it. I can’t believe how the community has come together to do so much because I feel like I've never don’t anything like this and I feel like this is a lot."
Paula Fajardo, Javier Adrian's mother says she's grateful the donations will save even more lives. She says with her son's organ donation and with a lot of love is how she is keeping her sons memory alive.
The blood drive will be at the Kenner City Park Pavilion from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday.
