KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) - Kearney kicks off its summer days with Heritage Day on Saturday. Organizers said the goal of the event is to foster family unity and promote a sense of community togetherness.

Organizers said it can take up to a year to put this event together.

The event will start at 9 a.m. with the Sue Bush Memorial two-mile run, and conclude with a fireworks show. There will also be a new feature people can enjoy at the park.

“The Botanical Gardens have almost been completed,” said Jeni Cramer, Recreation Coordinator, Kearney Parks and Rec. “So we’ll have Botanical Gardens tours tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. We’ll have self-guided tours and then as well as our portable tourist will be on site to answer any questions about the garden.”

Cramer said the event has become beloved by the community, with activities for all to enjoy, and the best part is it’s everyone’s favorite price.

“The community loves it. It’s a really great opportunity for families to get together,” said Cramer. “There’s lots of FREE, free things happening. We have like Family Fishing Day as well as a free lunch provide by Kearney Optimist, a story book walk, kayak and paddle board test drive.”

Cramer said there will be inflatables and other fun games for families to enjoy. She feels people should come to the event for all of the simple reasons.

“Just be able to enjoy everything that Yanney has to offer, and Heritage Day they’re so many opportunities you don’t have to come the whole day,” said Cramer. “There’s something where if you just want to come for the fishing day or you just want to come for the inflatables, you’ll be able to pick and chose and it’s just a great get together for everybody.”

Cramer said people come to Heritage Day to enjoy the park, family, and friends. She also hopes people will be able to enjoy some beautiful weather.
