Friday Morning Sports – Runza Seniors Head to Omaha, Warrant Issued for UNK Football Player, Shrine Bowl Kicks off Saturday With Area Athletes and Coaches, Two Big Red Baseball All-Americans, Sports Scores and Schedules

RUNZA SENIORS BEGIN OMAHA CENTRAL TOURNAMENT:

The Kearney Runza Legion Seniors head to the metro this weekend to battle in the Omaha Central Tournament at Fontenelle Park. 

Kearney (3-3) begins action at 11:30 AM and 2 PM today, followed by two games on Saturday at 10 AM and 12:30 PM. If the team makes the championship matchup, the Runza Seniors will continue to play until Sunday for the tournament title. 

The weekend begins a long road stretch for Kearney where they do not return to Memorial Field until Tuesday, June 13. The next KGFW Radio broadcast of Runza Senior Legion Baseball is set for Tuesday, June 6 at Ryder Park as Kearney rematches Grand Island Home Federal. 

 

WARRANT ISSUED FOR UNK FOOTBALL PLAYER:

Buffalo County Courts have issued an arrest warrant for a UNK Football player.

Xavier Delk, 23, has been charged with one count of first-degree assault, a class 2 felony. The warrant outlines Delk is accused of causing serious injury to another man on May 14th, the same time frame as a string of shootings and a stabbing that happened in Kearney.

A group of UNK Football players were present at the time of the incidents. The charges were filed last Friday, and an arrest warrant was issued Tuesday. Delk has been suspended from all football activities pending the outcome of the charge.

 

65th ANNUAL SHRINE BOWL KICKS OFF SATURDAY AT UNK:

The 65th annual Nebraska Shrine Bowl kicks off Saturday at 6:00 p.m. from UNK’s Ron & Carol Cope Stadium. In preparation for the high school football all-star game, both the North and South teams have been practicing all week.

Plenty of area athletes and coaches represent area teams for both the North and South teams in this year’s game. 

Representing the North includes Ord’s Sam Boettcher and Bridger Rice, Amherst’s Nolan Eloe, Northwest’s Victor Isele, and Grand Island’s Colton Marsh. The North is led by Bellevue West head coach Michael Huffman. 

The South team boasts Aurora’s Jack Allen and Carlos Collazo, Arapahoe’s Dylan Bahe, Kearney High’s Treyven Beckman and Jack Dahlgren, Central City’s Ashton Gragg, Holdrege’s Jackson Hinrichs, Hastings St. Cecilia’s Carson Kudlacek, York’s Dalton Snodgrass, and Adams Central’s Leighton Weber. The South is led by Platteview’s Mark McLaughlin and is assisted by Aurora’s Kyle Petersen and Cole Ashby, York’s Matt Brackhan, and Kearney High’s Brandon Cool, Darren Van Winkle, and Kyle Peters. 

Tickets for the game Saturday can be purchased at neshrinebowl.org. A parade is set to begin the weekend activities in downtown Kearney at 11 AM tomorrow.

 

ANDERSON, MATTHEWS EARN ALL-AMERICAN FOR BIG RED BASEBALL:

Nebraska’s Max Anderson and Brice Matthews both were named Collegiate Baseball All-Americans, the publication announced Thursday. Anderson was a second-team selection, while Matthews was named a third-team honoree.

Anderson had a breakout junior campaign in 2023, hitting .414 with 20 doubles, two triples, 21 home runs, 70 RBI and 51 runs scored as a unanimous First-Team All-Big Ten honoree.

Matthews concluded his junior season batting .359 at the plate with 11 doubles, two triples, 20 home runs, 67 RBI and 61 runs scored as a First-Team All-Big Ten selection.

 

HUSKER VOLLEYBALL BEGINS BRAZIL TOUR WITH WIN:

Nebraska Volleyball handled business in their first competition of their international tour in Brazil yesterday. The Huskers defeated the Minas Tênis Clube U19 team 25-8, 25-12, 25-13. 

Bekka Allick had 11 kills, three blocks and three aces to lead the Big Red in their first match in Brazil.

Lindsay Krause had 10 kills and two blocks, and Caroline Jurevicius had seven kills and three blocks. Hayden Kubik also posted seven kills. Andi Jackson had five kills in the third set. 

The Huskers are back in action today at 2:30 p.m. (CT) against Mackenzie.

 

JOKIC’S TRIPLE DOUBLE LEADS NUGGETS PAST HEAT IN GAME 1:

Jokic got a triple-double in his finals debut, Jamal Murray scored 26 points and the Nuggets had little trouble with the cold-shooting Miami Heat on the way to a 104-93 win in Game 1 on Thursday night.

The Heat had been 3-0 in openers so far in these playoffs, all on the road, but Denver is still unbeaten at home. Game 1 winners in the finals go on to win the title nearly 70% of the time.

Game 2 is in Denver on Sunday night.
