UNK football player jailed for assault
KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) - A UNK football player is in jail for assault connected to a string of crimes last month near the campus. Xavier Delk, 23, a UNK football player from Aurora, Colorado, is charged with one count of first-degree assault, which is a class two felony. Buffalo County jail records show he was incarcerated Sunday.

$3 million grant to help Kearney Police start assigned vehicle program for officers
KEARNEY, Neb. — The Kearney Police Department is adding cars to its fleet to become a take home vehicle department thanks to a major grant. Kearney Police announced Tuesday that it will begin the process of adding nearly 30 cars to its fleet. The new patrol vehicles will allow the department to start an Assigned Vehicle Program, in which officers are assigned a vehicle they can take home. Patrol vehicles are currently kept at the police station.
Kearney man injured after pickup runs into camper
KEARNEY, Neb. — A Kearney man is in the hospital after an accident involving a pickup and a camper. The Kearney County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene around 2:30 Thursday afternoon about two miles south of Kearney. A news release says a pickup turned east from Highway 44 onto Highway 50A and hit the back of a camper towed by a pickup, which had stalled in the eastbound lane. 72-year-old David Lewis of Kearney was in front of the pickup making repairs. The release says the crash pushed the pickup forward, dragging Lewis underneath the vehicle.

LINCOLN, Neb. (KSNB) - A Kearney man getting a nearly two-year prison term for being an unlawful user of controlled substances while in possession of firearms. Senior U.S. District Court Judge John M. Gerrard sentenced 29-year-old Tyler Ray Tockey to a 21 month prison term, followed by two years of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system. Tockey pleaded guilty to the offense on November 29, 2022.

Buffalo County man dies in crash with power pole
KEARNEY, Neb. — A Buffalo County man is dead after authorities say his pickup crashed into a power pole. The Buffalo County Sheriff's Office says deputies were called Tuesday evening to a single-vehicle crash near 160th and Poole Road, which is about 10 miles northeast of Kearney. A news release says a southbound pickup driven by 42-year-old Scott King entered the east ditch and hit the power pole. Deputies found King's body in a ditch about 100 yards from the truck.

Crews battle fire at Eatons in Kearney, facility evacuated
KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) - The Kearney Volunteer Fire Department rushed to an industrial fire at Eaton’s Corporation Wednesday evening. Upon arrival, KVFD crews found heavy black smoke coming from the roof and exterior doors of the west side of the facility and employees in the process of evacuation. The first arriving engine established a water supply and the crew pulled hand lines and made entry into the facility, which led to them quickly extinguishing the flames.
Update on Kearney Shootings Last Week
On Sunday, May 14, 2023 at approximately 2:30 a.m. Kearney Police Department Officers received a report of gunshots fired in the 1000 block of W 23rd Street. When officers arrived, an adult male subject was contacted near W 23rd and 7th Ave suffering from an apparent laceration/stab wound to the leg. Officers administered first aid at the scene and called for a rescue squad. The victim was transported by EMS to CHI Good Samaritan Hospital Emergency Department with a serious but non-life-threatening laceration.

Kearney teen pleads guilty to incest charge
KEARNEY, Neb. — A Kearney teen charged with incest has pleaded guilty. Jesus Vazquez-Morales pleaded guilty to one count of incest with a person under 18 years old. In exchange for his plea, prosecutors agreed not to file any additional charges against him and to not recommend a sentence of more than 10 years in prison.
