Redwood girls flag football finds success at 5:30 a.m.
Football set the foundation for Michael Wright II's life. In high school, Wright set the Dinuba career rushing records in yards (5,134) and touchdowns (85) in an outstanding career that saw the Emperors win a Central Section Division III championship in 2013. That paved the way to Sacramento State, where he was a member of the Hornets’ Division I football team. Today, Wright is paying it forward, teaching the game and rules of the gridiron and mentoring the next generation of players. Only this time, it’s flag football, not tackle. And instead of coaching boys, it’s girls. Wright is in his first season as the Redwood girls' flag football head coach. His task this fall has been introducing a brand new sport while building a program from scratch. How’s it going? For starters, Redwood found its stride immediately under the leadership of Wright and assistant coaches Joey Chica and Marcus Moore. Chica is a former pro soccer player who also reached the Division I level. Moore is also a former Division I football player. More: The polls are open!
