State ferry Tustumena repairs delay Kodiak Island service
The Alaska Marine Highway System has announced that the ferry Tustumena will be delayed coming out of its annual maintenance overhaul. Last week’s update means the Tustumena’s earliest sailing to Kodiak Island is on the evening of May 9, when it’s scheduled to stop in Port Lions and Ouzinkie as well as Kodiak, departing Homer at 8:45 p.m. Originally it was expected to be back in service by the end of this month, April 30.

And the U.S. Coast Guard retired a fleet of helicopters based out of Kodiak in a ceremony last Tuesday.

MV Tustumena spending extra time in the shipyard, causes ferry service delays to Kodiak Island
The Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) announced Wednesday, April 24 that the MV Tustumena ferry will be delayed coming out of its annual maintenance or overhaul. That means the earliest it will sail to Kodiak Island is the evening of May 9, when it’s scheduled to stop in Port Lions and Ouzinkie as well as Kodiak, departing Homer at 8:45 p.m. Originally it was expected to be back in service by the end of this month, April 30.
Nick Begich takes break from campaign trail, tracks and bags a Kodiak bear
After a successful convention with Alaska Republicans, congressional candidate Nick Begich changed clothes and headed to the airport, destination: Kodiak. From there, Vertigo Air transported Begich to the Uyak Bay area, where he had a tag to hunt Kodiak brown bear. He was accompanied by friend Pat McCollum of Wasilla, husband of Mat-Su School Board member Kathy McCollum.
Self-help housing could be one part of the answer to Kodiak’s housing crisis if municipalities divest land
Kodiak’s regional Alaska Native corporation is requesting land from local municipalities to help address the housing crisis. Koniag, in partnership with the nonprofit Alaska RurAL CAP, pitched its model for self-help housing to both the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly and City Council earlier this week, on the evenings of April 22 and 23 respectively.
Kodiak Alutiiq museum adds watercolors of Native ancestors to collection
The Kodiak Alutiiq Museum has expanded its collection by 11 watercolor paintings. The paintings are portraits of 19th-century Alutiiq/Sugpiaq people, and were created by Sugpiaq artist Cheryl Lacy.
