‘Remember the Removal’ cyclists introduced during Tribal Council meeting
TAHLEQUAH – The 2024 “Remember the Removal” team introduced themselves to the Tribal Council and public during the regular monthly council meeting on April 15. The team includes 12 riders, eight youth and four mentor riders, who have been preparing since December to retrace the Northern Route of the Trail of Tears, a route used by approximately 10,000 Cherokee people in the fall and winter of 1838 and 1839 to reach Indian Territory, now Oklahoma. The route is 950 miles and travels through seven states from Georgia into Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas and ends in Tahlequah.

TAHLEQUAH – Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. and Council Speaker Mike Shambaugh on April 15 signed a memorandum of understanding adding $1.7 million to the Council’s Special Infrastructure Fund, boosting a program that has already poured nearly $14 million into local road, bridge and community projects at the direction of individual members of the tribe’s legislative branch.
