AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — The city of Amarillo reports that a mechanical failure caused the Lift Station #4 to spill about 200,000 gallons of untreated sewage onto dry land in the area over the weekend in northwest Amarillo.

The city said, the “sanitary sewer overflow” at the lift station on 920 N Louisiana St started at 6 a.m. on Saturday and was contained at around 12 p.m.

A mechanical failure caused by heavy rains was cited as the issue for the overflow and spilled about 200,000 gallons of untreated sewage on dry land and the bar ditch in the area. The spill did not reach natural waters said the city.

CoA officials said clean-up activities were completed, including vacuum removal of untreated wastewater and the application of HTH to clean the remaining residual water.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality was notified and worked with the city to minimize the impact to the environment.
