A man in Michigan thought his dog was stolen , so he fatally shot the man he thought stole the dog. Now, he will serve a sentence of up to 50 years in prison for the murder , RadarOnline.com has learned.

Around 12:20 a.m. on Sept. 21, 2021, police were called to LakeView Apartments in Kalamazoo regarding a shooting , as Front Page Detectives reported.

Once at the scene, officers found 23-year-old Collin Mitchell lying on the ground outside his apartment with an apparent gunshot wound .

Responding medical personnel unsuccessfully attempted rescue efforts.

Mitchell was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators determined 24-year-old Jayshaun Bishop believed Mitchell had stolen his dog.

Bishop reportedly confessed to two people that he had shot Mitchell because of the pet.

However, he denied being involved in the shooting when police questioned him.

On Sept. 18, Bishop pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and felony firearms in connection with the 2021 murder of Mitchell, MLive reported.

Judge Ken Barnard sentenced Bishop to 23 to 50 years in prison for second-degree murder and two years for felony firearm, authorities said.

As part of the plea agreement, Bishop will serve the firearm sentence before the murder sentence begins.
