Breaking the Silence run unites survivors and supporters helping others to find freedom from their silence and shame

JOPLIN, Mo. (KOAM) — Breaking the Silence 5K & 10K is an annual event that speaks against Child Sexual Abuse . It unites survivors and supporters helping others to find freedom from their silence and shame.

This year they hope to "Flip the Script" as hundreds signed up to support the cause at Landreth Park.

Before the run began many came forward on stage who had boldly told parts of their story in a pre-recorded video.

STATISTICS :

• 1 in 4 girls by the time they are 18
• 1 in 6 boys by the time they are 18
• 38% of victims actually disclose it happened to them

The event also unites the community to come against this crime. Showing victims they are not alone in exposing the criminal act of their abuse. Numerous support agencies are sponsors of the event and/or were on-hand at the run.

BREAKING THE SILENCE/JOPLIN : “ Our charity of choice for 2022 is Rapha International. A not-for-profit organization that combats human trafficking and sexual exploitation. Rapha has aftercare campuses in Cambodia, Thailand and Haiti. ”
