Jonesville's Onsted tourney win highlights weekend's baseball and softball winners

HILLSDALE COUNTY — After a doubleheader loss to Michigan Center, the Jonesville varsity softball team rebounded for a win at the Onsted softball tournament. Their two wins were the major headline coming out of this weekend's baseball and softball games.

Jonesville beat Onsted 14-4, with Bryn Rusk earning the win on the mound with seven striking through five innings, giving up just three earned runs.

Senior Lyra Nichols had two homers, and Rusk also had one home run. Megan Hewlett and Keileigh Palmer each had a double-base hit. Nichols had five RBIs. Elena Prater led the team with three runs. Palmer led the team with three hits.

Nichols earned her fourth win in the circle with a 12-6 win over Sand Creek, striking out 16 and giving up one earned run. Nichols once-again homered for the Comets. Nichols so far has a county-leading five homers. Prater would also go deep for a homer in this game, her third of the season. Nichols led the team with four total hits, including a double. Prater and Lindsey led the team with three RBIs each. Hewlett and Prater each had three hits. Hewlett led the team with three runs.

Overall, the team had seven homers and a staggering 20 doubles this week.

"With so many new players on the team, it has been great to see what each of them is capable of," coach Marlena Nichols said. "Moving forward, I am hopeful that we will continue to work together to improve in all aspects of the game."

They weren't the only big winners of this weekend's matchups. On Friday, the Comet baseball team earned a 21-2 win over Vandercook Lake in a makeup game. They then went on to split their tourney series with a loss to Onsted (8-2) and a win over Reading (21-6).

Senior Wade Sommers had his best game so far this season at-bat against Vandercook Lake, earning a double and triple-base hit, three RBIs and two runs. The pitching effort was led by Wade Sommers with three strikeouts. Four total Comet pitchers saw time in the game, with Newell, Marshall Baker and Vanbuskirk each earning a strikeout.

Sommer led the team against Onsted, as well. Despite the loss, Sommers had two hits, including a triple, one RBI and one run. Newell had three strikeouts in three innings. Micah Calligan got the start, earning a strikeout and giving up three earned runs.

The team made a rebound to beat their former league and county rivals: the Reading Rangers. The 21-6 final saw Newell, Herendeen, Kade Shannon and Vanbuskirk all earning multi-base hits. Newell had two doubles and Vanbuskirk had a triple. Bowers stole three bases. Ian Doyal, Vanbuskirk and Calligan all had three RBIs. Newell led the team in hits with three and runs with four.

Doyal got the start on the mound, earning three strikeouts. Talen Titus got the win with four strikeouts over two innings, giving up just two hits, with the team allowing one run.

Other Weekend Winners

Camden-Frontier baseball continued their path of success, spitting a tough doubleheader with non-league opponent Homer. In the 11-8 Homer win, Rodney Weir had the team's first homer of the season. Bryon Hukill had two doubles and a total of four hits and three RBIs.

In the RedHawk's 5-4 win, the pitchers held back a Trojan rally late in the bottom of the seventh. Senior Logan Leggett was credited the save. Senior Dawson Shaw got the win with eight total strikeouts and just three earned runs. Weir had a double-base hit. and led the team with two runs. Hukill had two hits and an RBI. Hukill was 8-12 with 6 RBIS during the week. He was 6-7 against Homer on Friday. Shaw stole three bases.

"Splitting with Homer was huge for the program going forward, realizing if they have fun and just play baseball then everything is going good," coach Conant said. "If we aren't having fun, then we aren't playing to our ability."

Other Weekend Stats

  • Drew Elder and Caiden Baker each had a double-base hit for Reading baseball against Jonesville. Elder had an RBI and a run. Baker scored a run. Brayden Foley had one hit and two RBIs. Stephen Anderson had two hits and two RBIs. Colton Hoover had two hits, one RBI and one run. Hoover scored the lone run in the 12-1 loss to Hanover-Horton in their first Saturday game.
  • In their 9-8 loss to Onsted, the Reading softball team had both Maggie Santure and Ariana McDowell hit homers. Kloee Monahan, Aubree Ervans, Leah Headley and McDowell had a double. Monahan had four hits. McDowell had two RBIs and two runs. In their 11-10 loss to Sand Creek, Ranger athletes Blakeleigh Cornstubble, Santure, and Monohan each homered. Santure had a triple. Cornstubble and Healdey had one double. Santure led the team with four RBIs. Cornstubble had three. Ervans led the team with three runs. McDowell led the team with three hits.
