(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A young woman whose boyfriend allegedly beat her over the weekend in Joliet has died.

Bond was set at more than $2.5 million for 30-year-old Demetrius Glover, who is accused of severely beating his 23-year old girlfriend and fleeing police, Joliet Police said.

Police say the woman was taken to Silver Cross Hospital by her family on Saturday. She reportedly was unconscious, with serious head trauma.

Glover was soon identified as a suspect and seen driving the next day, officials said.

After leading police officers on a chase, he crashed his vehicle and fled on foot, police said. Firefighters plucked him from the Des Plaines River.

Glover initially was charged with aggravated domestic battery and aggravated fleeing and eluding.

An autopsy on the 23-year-old woman was pending.
