Former South Lake Tahoe mayor pleads guilty in church embezzlement scheme

The former mayor of South Lake Tahoe pleaded guilty Thursday to wire fraud in connection with her admitted embezzlement of nearly $400,000 from a church where she worked as a part-time bookkeeper. Tamara Le Ann Wallace wore a dark blazer and jeans, her shoulder-length hair adorned with light blue dye on the tips, standing straight and using a loud, firm voice to declare her culpability in federal court in Sacramento. “I plead guilty,” she told U.S. District Judge Troy L. Nunley. Wallace, 56, faces up to 20 years in prison on the single felony charge and could be ordered to pay a fine of up to $800,000. Last year, Wallace sent shockwaves through the community when she abruptly resigned as mayor and published a confession in local news outlets admitting that she had stolen money from the Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church. Wallace began working for the church in 2018 and commenced stealing from the organization as early as the following year, in 2019, she admitted in her plea agreement. The theft, eventually totaling about $390,000, continued until September 2025, the agreement said. She was a signer on the church’s bank account and was well-trusted by the staff and members,
