JOHNSON COUNTY, Ga. (WGXA) -- Johnson County Sheriff Greg Rowland presented a proposal to rename the Johnson County Jail to the Danny Elbert Detention Center, in honor of Deputy Danny Lee Elbert, who was shot and killed in 1990 during an escape attempt by an inmate in the jail.
Jackie Lee Johnson shot Deputy Elbert and stole a patrol car before being caught two days later in Bartow County, where he was taken in by a State Trooper and Sheriff Rowland.
Johnson's girlfriend provided him with the pistol which was used to kill Elbert and both Johnson and his girlfriend were convicted of murder and sentenced to life. Johnson's girlfriend was paroled in 2012 but Johnson is still in prison.
Sheriff Rowland presented the proposal to Johnson County Commissioners on March 13 and the Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the change.
