GAP's Big Savage Tunnel to close for the winter

The Big Savage Tunnel on the Great Allegheny Passage trail will be closed for the winter months at 10 a.m. Nov. 25. The closure happens every year to maintain a warmer, steadier temperature inside the tunnel to extend the life of the tunnel lining. Big Savage Tunnel will reopen at a date to be determined in the spring of 2027 when weather conditions permit. Allegheny County Maryland announced that the Borden Tunnel will close Nov. 25 and reopen April 1 to complete the rehabilitation of the Borden Tunnel Great Allegheny Passage Pedestrian Trail. The GAP trail will otherwise remain open for use. There will be no alternate routes or transportation to span this section during the closure period. Pittsburgh's Wabash Tunnel will permanently close Dec. 1

Pittsburgh Regional Transit will permanently close the Wabash Tunnel to traffic on Dec. 1 after its board voted to approve the closure. The decision follows an evaluation of the tunnel's condition, safety and long-term viability, according to a community announcement. Keeping the tunnel open would require an estimated $43 million in rehabilitation. PRT has said the tunnel now primarily carries private vehicles rather than public transit. About 1,500 vehicles use it each day, and PRT no longer provides scheduled transit service through the tunnel. “The Wabash Tunnel has a long history in Pittsburgh, but today it primarily serves private vehicle traffic rather than public transit,” PRT CEO Katharine Kelleman said. “With an estimated $43 million needed to rehabilitate the tunnel, we have a responsibility to focus our limited resources on the infrastructure that is most critical to delivering safe, reliable transit service.” Why PRT is closing the Wabash Tunnel Although the overall tunnel structure remains in fair condition, its lighting, ventilation and electrical systems are in poor to critical condition and have exceeded their useful life. Significant rehabilitation would be required to keep the tunnel open and bring those systems up to current safety standards. The closure will not affect

The situation became even more complicated when the transformer ruptured and spilled oil over the bridge deck. An initial report to Harrison County 911 indicated the transformer had caught fire, that turned out to not be the case when the fire department arrived.
