Neighbors in Jeffersonville still on edge after deadly triple shooting
A deadly shooting has left neighbors in shock.
"It's got a lot of people their stomachs are upset and not sleeping," Frank Avis said.
Three people were shot, one fatally, in Jeffersonville, Indiana, over the weekend, police said.
On Monday evening, police confirmed that a shooting had happened the day before, around 8:30 p.m. Sunday, in the area of Veronica Place.
Ashley Roach says she was driving home when she heard the gunshots.
"There were people arguing outside and tussling, and it started as what I saw as a verbal altercation and then people started throwing punches. I remember sitting in my car and being like, 'I wonder if one of these guys has a gun?' Next thing I know, I hear like five or six shots," Roach said.
When officers got to the scene, they said they found a trio with gunshot wounds, one of whom was already dead. The victim was identified as 41-year-old Charles Barker.
Police called the shooting a "focused attack" and said those involved were familiar with each other. People who live nearby say they can still remember the chaos from that night.
"There was lots of screaming, lots of distress. When I was coming down a couple blocks over, I saw some people fleeing on foot," Roach said.
"The whole idea of shooting in the neighborhood was a surprise because it's a quiet neighborhood. We're right next to the Clark County Sheriff's Department," Avis said.
They said everyone who "perpetrated acts of violence" is accounted for and has been interviewed. At least one person was arrested and charged with battery and disorderly conduct.
No further details about any suspects were immediately available.
Jeffersonville police said they got assistance from Indiana State Police, ISP Crime Scene Unit, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms and Explosives Canine Unit.
