Kevin Cahill of Waukesha won the Wisconsin State Golf Association’s Senior Match Play Championship title Thursday at Riverside Golf Course in Janesville.

Cahill earned the No. 3 seed in the 32-player bracket in a qualifying round of 18 holes Monday at Riverside, which he played in 1-under par.

During the match play portion of the tournament, Cahill built up insurmountable leads with multiple holes left to play in each round. On Tuesday he beat Dennis Flipse of Sheboygan 4 and 3 (4-up with three holes left to go) in the round of 32 and Mike Murphy of Minocqua 3 and 1.

On Wednesday, he won matches 5 and 3 over Robert Gregorski of Menasha and 3 and 2 over Jamie Young of Salem.

In his semifinal against Young, Cahill was 3-down through eight holes but took Nos. 9 and 10 with a par and birdie to cut his deficit to one. Young got a hole back at 11, but Cahill won the next five holes for a come-from-behind victory.

His strong finish included a par at 12, birdies at 13, 15 and 16, and an eagle at 14.

That set up a championship match Thursday with No. 21 seed Tom Cabush of Brookfield, which Cahill won 5 and 3.

Cahill led the field with 28 par-breakers (27 birdies and the one eagle) in his five rounds of action, nearly twice as many as the second-highest total for the week.

The win was Cahill’s fourth top 10 finish of the season on the WSGA Senior Tour.
