UPDATE (6/7/23) -- A GoFundMe was started Wednesday for the homeowner, identified on the fundraiser as Jim Kelly.
Kaitlyn Kelly- who identifies herself as his daughter- said he escaped with only the clothes on his back. The home and cars were completely lost, along with their two beloved cats.
She said the fire was started by a lightning strike.
In the GoFundMe, she explained the family's love of the home and the challenges they've been facing recently. In part, Kelly said:
"My family has seen enough tragedy now to last a lifetime, and they’re at a loss of how to move forward. My goal is to raise enough money to replace the basic necessities to live and hopefully make a small part of this tragic event easier. On behalf of my dad and sister, who are known for being two of the most generous, charitable, and dependable people to exist, I ask you to consider donating to help them rebuild their lives or sharing their story."
Fire crews are responding to a structure fire on the 1900 block of Wild Wing Lane Tuesday night.
A James Island Fire Department Bataillon Chief on scene said they received multiple calls around 9:20 p.m. about "major flames."
One person was home sleeping at the time and was woken up by a fire alarm. They were able to escape without injuries, fire officials said.
Charleston County Sheriff's Office officials say deputies are assisting the James Island PSD Fire Department on scene.
