Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters said he will consider more DUI patrols if voters legalize recreational marijuana use in Florida.

Voters will consider Amendment 3 in November. It would allow adults 21 or older to possess, purchase or use marijuana products and marijuana accessories for non-medical purposes.

Supporters say regulated marijuana is a better alternative to cannabis products sold on the black market. But Waters opposes the measure.

“Marijuana smoke is the most offensive smell to me ever, and I think a lot of states that have already done that,” Waters said during a town hall meeting Thursday. “I don’t think you expect me to say anything differently because I’m a policeman, but a lot of the states that have already done that have buyers remorse.”

A statewide poll from the University of North Florida in late July found that 64% of people surveyed said they support the amendment.

Like all constitutional amendments in Florida, Amendment 3 needs approval from at least 60% of voters to pass.
