The Aldi grocery chain plans to convert the Winn-Dixie in Fleming Island to an Aldi store, one of the first to be identified in Greater Jacksonville.

Clay County is considering Aldi’s request for a permit to remodel the Winn-Dixie at 1545 County Road 220 at a cost of $1.75 million.

Aldi bought Winn-Dixie and Harveys grocery stores last year from Southeastern Grocers, the parent company based in Jacksonville. Aldi has said it plans to convert some Winn-Dixies to Aldi, but the stores have not been publicly identified.

An Aldi spokesperson told Jacksonville Today last month that the company would begin to convert about 50 stores this summer and complete them in 2025. A “meaningful amount” of Winn-Dixie and Harveys stores will remain as is, the spokesperson said.

The Jacksonville Daily Record reported recently that the Harveys supermarket at 2261 Edgewood Ave. W may be the first in the Jacksonville area to convert. As of last month, the city had received construction plans for a significant remodel of the Harveys building into an Aldi.
