    New York hosting largest Special Olympics

    ITHACA, N.Y. ( WIVT/WGBH ) — New York is hosting its largest Special Olympics this weekend.

    The event will consist of more than 1,200 athletes and coaches ready to compete for first place in the eight competitions for the State Summer Games.

    Stacy Hengsterman, Special Olympics New York President and CEO says its a great to watch the athletes compete and try their best to win.

    “This is the weekend our athletes from all across the state have been training for. State Summer Games competition will be fierce as athletes go for the gold in eight sports,” said Hengsterman.

    The sports the athletes will be competing in are swimming, gymnastics, powerlifting, volleyball, track and field, basketball, bowling, and tennis.

    The venues for the various events will be held at Ithaca College, Ithaca High School, Midway Lanes, and Cornell University.
