Hudson, FL – A Pinellas County Sheriff’s Deputy was seriously injured early Tuesday morning in a collision with an AmeriGas propane tanker truck on Hudson Avenue, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP). The crash, which occurred at approximately 5:23 AM on October 1, 2024, prompted road closures and an emergency response from local fire crews.

FHP officials reported that the propane tanker, driven by a 60-year-old man from Spring Hill, was reversing across both eastbound and westbound lanes of Hudson Avenue into a private driveway located at 15222 Hudson Avenue. At the same time, a marked Pinellas Sheriff’s Office Chevy Tahoe, driven by a 32-year-old on-duty Deputy, was traveling eastbound on Hudson Avenue.

West of Hays Road, the Sheriff’s vehicle collided with the rear trailer portion of the tanker, causing the Tahoe to become lodged underneath the trailer. The driver of the propane truck was unharmed, but the Deputy sustained serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Emergency crews responded quickly, with fire departments on the scene to safely burn off a minor amount of propane that remained in the tanker at the time of the crash. As a precaution, Hudson Avenue will remain closed for several hours as officials continue their investigation and handle the propane situation.

Motorists are urged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes until further notice.

The Florida Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the cause of the crash. Updates on the Deputy’s condition and any additional road closures will be shared as information becomes available.

Propane tankers need to have multi lights on all sides like semi’s so they are more visible when it’s pitch black outside!
