Silver Bay Baseball Swings into Sensational Season Success
Ward Wallin, coach of the Silver Bay Mariner’s baseball team, had a lucky fishing opener. When we spoke, he was going to be frying up some surf, having caught walleye and northern pike. I was going to be eating turf. The two northern I caught were pretty puny and our walleye got away when I was too slow with the net. Ward called that a pilot’s error. As I was fielding for my mom, whose line the walleye had grabbed, I guess you could also call that a fielder’s error!

A low pressure system crossing the region today is responsible for rain and an eventual wind shift. Our Thursday starts with widespread showers in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin, and we’ll gradually dry out from the west and southwest through the morning and afternoon. Areas of fog have set up this morning with locally dense for high terrain areas of the Head of Lake Superior. A Dense Fog Advisory has been issued for Carlton County and South St. Louis County until noon. Skies clear this evening, then cloud cover remains rather minimal tonight with patchy fog developing.
Popular trail on Minnesota's North Shore closed for repair work
A popular segment of the North Shore’s Superior Hiking Trail closed Wednesday so crews can repair damage caused by years of heavy use. The Superior Hiking Trail Association announced in April that the Bean and Bear Lakes Loop near Silver Bay would be temporarily closing as of May 15. The closure includes all of the scenic overlooks from rock outcroppings high above the two lakes, as well as the Penn Creek and Bear Lake campsites. A 1.2-mile spur trail also is closed.

Iron Range, Minn.- A summer lunch program is in need of volunteers. The annual Meet Up and Chow Down program put on by the United Way of Northeastern Minnesota is set to return on June 3. The program provides free lunches during the summer months to area students. Meals are available every weekday except Fridays at locations across the range. Volunteers are needed in Biwabik, Chisholm, Cook, Hibbing, Hoyt Lakes, Keewatin, Nashwauk, and Virginia.

Students take Prospector ATV safety course
The Prospector ATV Club held an ATV safety class for kids age 11 to 15 years old on Saturday, May 4 at the Longbranch event center in Winton. Those ATV riders born after July 1, 1987 and older than 16 years old must complete the on-line DNR safety certificate course and must have that available for inspection when out riding.
