Jeopardy! fans mock contestant's age after mysterious claim

Jeopardy! fans mocked one contestant online after he made a bizarre claim about his age .

Viewers of the show were left baffled when Sam Buttery appeared on the Inside Jeopardy podcast and seemed to claim to be far older than he appears. The baffling moment came when he made the statement: “Some of us are from the days when the USSR didn't have a Kazakhstan.”

One listener of the Podcast then took to Reddit to share why that simply didn't make sense to them as they wrote: "Now on one hand, the USSR never had a Kazakhstan, the area we know as the country changed its name from the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic to Kazakhstan when it left the USSR (the last SSR to do so, four days after Yeltsin declared Russia’s independence!), but the USSR had a Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic up until December 16, 1991, going back to … 1925! Is Sam 100 years old?"

They then stressed that they were not posing it as a serious question as they added: "(Again, this is not a serious question, I don’t think Sam is 100 years old, nor do I care to really know how old he is - I’ll just say he’s the same age as Steve Martin - was just something I chuckled at while listening to the pod.)"

Other users of the social media site then commented on the post as they shared their amusement at the comment. One posted: "Based on a comment Ken made in season 1 of Masters, we can conclude he is less than 1,024 years old."

Another said: "Sam is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma." A third mused: "This is like when the Genie says that 10,000 years will give you such a crick in the neck--hinting that Agrabah is not some forgotten place in the past, but is actually a vision of a place thousands of years in the future, presumably after nuclear weapons bombed the world into sandy, nontechnological oblivion."

A fourth social media user joked: "He's 27. It's been a hard day's night on Jeopardy! for him." A fifth quipped: "Old enough for an AARP platinum membership."
