Top on the list is lavender rats and mice simply "hate the smell of lavender". Either spritz some lavender-scented spray or better still, grow a lavender plant for a natural rodent repellent.
You can even whip up your own formula by mixing a quarter to half a cup of the flowers with one-quarter cup of water in a spritz bottle. Vigorously shake before each application and spray the mixture onto surfaces in targeted areas until they're moist but not soaking.
Citrus oil
To maintain its effectiveness, refresh this solution monthly to ensure mice steer clear of your home.
Citrus oil is another culprit that rats and mice detest, largely due to the presence of limonene, which is abundant in lemons, oranges, and grapefruits.
This same compound, limonene, is what infuses soaps, detergents, and disinfectants with that unmistakable clean, fresh scent we all love around our homes.
Consequently, citrus oils such as lemon and orange oil are touted as "very effective at keeping rats and mice away" from certain spots or items.
Citrus oils are indeed robust, so it's advised to use them sparingly. It is recommended to dilute with water before applying to any areas or items that need treating.
Peppermint oil
The effectiveness of peppermint oil in deterring rats and mice is linked to their aversion to the menthol aroma.
Menthol's scent prompts rodents to "associate it with danger and fear" resulting in their attempt to "avoid areas" where the oil is present or keep as distant from the smell as feasible.
A popular choice for crafting DIY mouse repellents, the potent fragrance of peppermint oil is ideal for keeping mice at bay. To do this, place a few drops on cotton balls and position them in usual mouse hiding spots.
Chilli powder
Chilli powder comes in handy for homemade rat repellents due to being "inexpensive and easy to obtain at most grocery stores".
Prepare the mixture by combining about two tablespoons of chilli powder per litre of water before transferring it into your spray bottle or hand sanitiser container.
Experts have clarified: "This is an effective home remedy for getting rid of mice because it smells terrible to them and they won't stay around long enough for their sense of smell to become accustomed to it."
To apply, liberally sprinkle chilli powder in locations where mouse presence is suspected such as behind cupboards or under pieces of furniture.

Remember to be careful with essential oils around your pets especially cats. Try strong dryer sheets in your heating vents. Supposedly cinnamon works too. We have 4 cats and use traps as needed.
