John Oliver's Last Week Tonight snatched the Emmy for outstanding scripted variety series, outshining Saturday Night Live in the process - but it's his speech that everyone is talking about today .

The comedian's acceptance speech veered off-script in a poignant moment when he was cut short by music while honoring his late family dog .

"In particular, I want to thank the silly odd dog," said Oliver. "We have the most fantastic dog, and she was at our wedding and she got us through the pandemic. She was with us for two pregnancies..."

As he faced the orchestral interruption, Oliver quipped, "Perfect choice of music." He went on, expressing his grief in a manic state: "We had to say goodbye to her. F--- you! I feel like Sarah McLachlan right now", dismissing the premature play-off music at the Emmys.

Amid applause, Oliver dedicated his win not only to his dog but broadly praised canine companions. "This isn't just for her. This is for all dogs," he continued.

"All dogs, you are all very good girls. You are very good boys. You all deserve a treat. Play me off now! Thanks so much."

Notching up its 30th Emmy, Last Week Tonight, now in its 11th year on HBO, has been a critical success since its 2014 inception.

Chatting with Variety earlier on the red carpet, Oliver revealed his indifference to losing potential Trump material if the ex-president falls short against Kamala Harris in the next election.

"[If Trump doesn't win] I don't lose any material that I'm not happy to throw overboard," Oliver disclosed.

Oliver stated: "The whole 'he's been a gift to comedy' - it's not a gift any of us really wanted and we're happy to return it for store credit down the line."

However, he cautioned: "It's going to be very, very close. And if Trump loses he's not going to accept it, making the fact that it's going to be that close more ridiculous. ... It's going to be bumpy."

"It's going to be close and historically he's not handled loss well. If you're not concerned, then you haven't been watching. There's plenty to be concerned about it."
