UIL Girls Basketball Playoffs: Irion County tops district rival Veribest for state berth

SNYDER — Irion County's KK Hart and Melanie Rainey each scored in double figures as the Hornets punched their ticket to the Class A girls basketball state tournament with a 45-38 victory against district rival Veribest at The Coliseum.

Irion County outscored the Falcons 12-5 in the fourth quarter to clinch the victory in the Region II-A final. Hart scored 12 points to lead the Hornets and Rainey added 10 as the Hornets improved to 29-8 on the season.

Irion County rallied from a first half deficit as Veribest led 21-18 but the Hornets outscored the Falcons 27-17 in the second half. The two teams split their regular season meetings in District 11-A this season.

Emily Scott led Veribest with 13 points.

The Hornets will advance to the state tournament where they will play a yet to be determined opponent at either 8:30 a.m. or 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 2 at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
