Fairbury's lost railroad found
Fairbury was established in 1857 when the Peoria & Oquawka Railroad (later the TP&W) laid its tracks from Peoria to the Indiana border. In 1872, the Chicago & Paducah Railroad laid new tracks from Pontiac through to Fairbury. About two years later, the Chicago & Paducah extended its line from Fairbury southeast to Strawn. Just a few years later, the Strawn extension was removed, and a railroad from Forrest to Strawn was used instead. It has always been a mystery exactly where the Chicago & Paducah turned south from Fairbury and headed to Strawn.

The so-called “Illinois Valley Reliability Project” will run about 21 miles from an existing Ameren substation in Princeton east to a new switching station on the north side of Peru. The line will be 138-kilovolt. Ameren's goal is to have the project in service in late 2029.
