A rough stretch continued for the Pella softball team at the Oskaloosa tournament Saturday, falling to #14 in 3A Chariton 4-0 and 11-6 to Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont. The Dutch offense could not solve Chargers’ starter Layne Braby, tallying just four hits in the contest. While the Dutch bats got going against the Rockets, they had to do so from behind after giving up five runs in the first inning. Payton Lyons was 3-for-3 in that game with a home run. Pella has dropped six games in a row and will try to find their footing Monday in a doubleheader against #1 in 4A Dallas Center-Grimes on the road.

The Melcher-Dallas Softball Squad went 0-2 on Saturday at the 40th Murray Invitational losing to Lamoni 7-6, and falling hard to East Union 15-2. In the Lamoni game, The Saints got down 6-3 and playing as the home team, clawed back to get it down to a one run game, but got no closer. The Saints were hampered by five errors in the loss. Peyton Anderson and Summer Karpan had two hits each with Anderson getting three RBI. Emma Clark took the loss pitching four innings. The Saints gave up nine runs in the 4th inning and could not recover. More fielding errors gave the Saints problems. Summer Karpan took the loss pitching 3 2/3 innings. Melcher-Dallas returns to action Monday hosting a double header with Orient-Macksburg.

Pleasantville won the opener of the tournament Saturday over Bedford 3-2 behind the pitching of Peyton Major who threw 76 pitches in the game. In the opener Caleb Cook was 2-of-4 at the plate as was Braylon Binigham, who also had two RBIs.

Both Knoxville Summer sports squads were able to pick off wins in Centerville on Friday as the baseball Panthers remained unbeaten with a 7-5 victory and the softball squad won 10-6. Lincoln Norris got the win on the mound going six innings. He along with Luke Spaur, Kade Bellon, Trey Wight, Koby Higginbotham, and Trenton Kingery had hits, with Kingery’s being a triple. The last few games have seen Kingery start to be more himself at the plate, and the offseason work says Coach Turner Devore is paying off.

Whether it’s Groundhog Day or a case of deja vu, the Class 1A boys state team tennis finals has had the same end result for four consecutive seasons. And despite their best efforts to end the reign of the Saints, the Pella boys tennis team fell to Xavier in the state championship match Thursday 5-1 at the University of Iowa tennis courts in Coralville. The Dutch could not climb out of an early hole against the now four-time defending title winners, dropping the first set in five of the six matches on the court. Beau Bush earned the lone Dutch victory, and despite holding a lead in a pivotal set three, Jack Briggs ultimately fell in the No. 1 singles match, which gave the Saints their best of nine matches needed to claim the top trophy again. This is the fourth consecutive season Pella has placed 2nd in the Class 1A tournament.

Central College is offering Junior Golf Nights on the school’s Ryerson Practice Facility this summer. Junior high and high school players may participate in any or all of the six sessions. Cost is $15 per session and golf balls are provided. They’ll be conducted June 8, 15, 22, and 29 and July 6 and 13. Players should meet at the A.N. The USAC National Sprint Cars will make an appearance tonight and tomorrow night for the Avanti Windows and Doors Corn Belt Clash. Kyle Cummins currently leads the USAC National Sprint Car points by 22 over four-time points champion Brady Bacon who has won four times in a USAC event at Knoxville, sweeping the weekend back in 2019. The weekly 360 and 410 sprint cars will also be in action this week with the 360s tonight and the 410s tomorrow night. You can listen to both nights starting with Live Track Side at 5:00 and Race Nights Live at 7:00 on the DeYarman Automotive Radio Racing Network on KNIA. Live Track Side tonight will air on both 94.3 and 95.3 KNIA, while Race Nights Live will only air on 95.3 due to local sports coverage.

Ashlan Burton has been named as a full-time assistant coach for the Simpson College track and field men’s and women’s programs. Burton is a seven-time NCAA Division II All-American at the University of Central Missouri, returns to her home state of Iowa after a one-year stint at Lees Summit North High School where she served as the head strength and conditioning coach as well as a throws coach for the track and field program. The Urbandale, Iowa native will work primarily with the Storm throwers.

It was a complete sweep by the Knoxville Boys and Girls of Summer in Eddyville on Thursday night as the class 3A #7 baseball squad routed the Rockets by a combined 23-2 score and the softball Panthers held on for a 5-4 win as the softball game was heard live on 95.3 KNIA. EBF got on the board in the 2nd inning with two runs, but the Panthers settled down and largely shut down the Rockets with stellar pitching from Ashlyn Finarty and two big home runs from Finarty and Ciara Heffron, a 5-2 Panther lead. However the Rockets refused to go away plating two runs in the bottom 6th but Knoxville slammed the door shut with a game ending double play as right fielder Jordyn Counts made an acrobatic catch then doubled off the runner at 2nd. Coach Carla Smith told KNIA/KRLS Sports, Finarty’s leadership from the circle proved big during the game.

The first of two Indianola Chamber of Commerce Summer Nights Live concerts is Friday on the downtown Indianola square. The chamber changed the concerts to Summer Nights Live on the downtown Indianola square from Friday Night Live in Memorial Park, taking advantage of the finished construction on the Indianola downtown square. An interactive week of activities incorporating the history of Pella’s Dutch heritage returns to the Pella Historical Village this summer. Lisa Zylstra is bringing back the Dutch Day Camp for the 31st year on July 17th to 21st, a program that includes Dutch games, speaking and singing in the native language, crafts, and history lessons. The camp is open to incoming 5th and 6th graders and programming will be co-hosted by Jim Uitermarkt and Dr. Ronald Rietveld. Registration costs $80 for Pella Historical Society members and $100 for non-members, and includes a daily sack lunch.
