The Indianola High School softball team participated in the annual “Strike Out Cancer” game against rival Southeast Polk last week, a longstanding tradition to raise funds, awareness, and to support those around the programs who have been affected by cancer. Head coach Stacy Evans tells KNIA News the annual game has honored many former players and coaches who have been affected by cancer, and presents an opportunity to come together as a community.

The Wildcats struck first with a run in the first, but Indianola answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to lead 2-1 after the first. Both teams scored again in the second with the Indians leading 3-2, before a wild third inning included the Wildcats scoring four runs and the Indians scoring three to tie the game at six, and the offense continued in the fourth with the Indians adding two more to lead 8-6 after the fourth. The Wildcats earned another run back in the sixth, but the Indians held on to win the contest 8-7 to win their third straight game.

Kerry Madsen did not find the runner first, but he finished 1st in the 410 A-Main Saturday at the Knoxville Raceway as heard live on KNIA. Madsen had to deal with Austin McCarl, Aaron Reutzel and Chase Randall before the track went rubber down the final ten laps and Madsen just had to hold his line for the win. Madsen told KNIA/KRLS Sports as Reutzel passed him about midway through the race, he noticed where he needed to run.

Indianola Parks and Rec is hosting a program highlighting stories from Iowa’s veterans in their next installment of their Afternoon Adventures series this afternoon. Becky Lane with Indianola Parks and Rec tells KNIA News Sara Maniscalco Robinson, and Iowa National Guard Broadcast Journalist since 1997, will discuss the preserved stories of Iowa’s veterans, including accounts of the day Pearl Harbor was bombed, the morning the Twin Towers were attacked, and what it was like to be a woman in the military in WWII among many others. The Afternoon Adventure Speaker Series will be at 2pm at the Indianola Activity Center, and is free to the public. The program is funded by Humanities Iowa, a private, non-profit state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Washington State Bank has announced the opening of their lending office in Pella. A Grand Opening celebration will be held on Wednesday, May 31st, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at 703 Main St in Pella. The PACE Alliance will be joining the group at 4:00 PM for an official ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The Indianola High School Class of 2023 graduates today, with 250 seniors walking the stage to receive their diplomas. The graduation ceremony will be livestreamed for those unable to attend. The student speaker will be Logan Piper, with Madame Priebe being the keynote speaker. The ceremony will recognize honors students, in addition to those joining the military. The Warren County Fair begins July 26th, featuring four nights of grandstand events that includes a pair of concerts. Funeral services for Marilyn Charline Miller, 83, of Knoxville, will be held Friday, June 2, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Knoxville. Interment will be at the Graceland Cemetery following the service. Family will receive friends on Thursday June 1st from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Knoxville. Memorials may be made in care of Marilyn’s family to be used for the Music Therapy Program at Grand Meadows Luther Manor, where she had resided the last few years.

Summer reading programs begin at the Pella Public Library after classes at local schools have now dismissed. Youth Services Librarian Katie Dreyer says reading challenges for prizes will return, with digital options for reading logs. Funeral Services for Tom Holmberg, 86, of Oskaloosa, will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m., at Central United Methodist Church in Oskaloosa. Burial will be in Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa with Military Honors by the Oskaloosa Honor Guard. Visitation will begin Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Langkamp Funeral Chapel and the family will greet visitors from 5-7 p.m. Langkamp Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

The park rangers at Lake Red Rock would like to remind the public about camping safety this holiday weekend. Park Ranger Tracy Spry says it’s important to supervise all children, especially at campgrounds near waterways, and to know where they are headed at all times. She reminds campers to only start fires in designated areas. Additionally, especially with many campgrounds closed, those traveling through full lots should be prepared for extra pedestrian traffic.
