Pella Track Club Youth Meet Benefits Pella Food Shelf

The already-launched Pella Farmers Market and the upcoming Thursdays in Pella in June and July will have central park in Pella busy with residents and visitors this summer. Mary Mansfield and Trisha Klok with the PACE Alliance are looking forward to the return of weekly activities downtown, which will be held in conjunction with ongoing Farmers Market activities on the east side of the square. The first Thursdays in Pella of the summer is Thursday, starting at 6 p.m., with the theme of “Jam with the Fam.” The KNIA/KRLS Lil’ Big Red Radio is broadcasting every Thursday from Pella in June and July.

The Indianola Chamber of Commerce annual Golf Classic is on July 12th, with all chamber members and those in the community invited to participate. The event is returning to a shotgun start, and Chamber President and CEO Amanda Zwanziger tells KNIA News sponsorship opportunities are now available to showcase your business, and are also available for a three-year commitment to lock in the current rates. The event also includes a silent auction, which includes a week-stay in Las Vegas and an Iowa Hawkeye VIP Package among others. The event is July 12th at the Indianola Golf and Country Club. The Marion County Extension Office will be offering a Jam Workshop which is offered to youth fourth grade and up. The students get to attend the workshop and learn safe methods for making jam. Youth Coordinator with the 4-H Extension Office, Ashtin Wells tells KNiA/KRLS News, “It is only $5 to register for that and that means you get to make jam and take it home.”

Summer reading programs begin at the Pella Public Library after classes at local schools have now dismissed. Youth Services Librarian Katie Dreyer says reading challenges for prizes will return, with digital options for reading logs. A Marion County Poverty Conference will be held next week at the Knoxville High School Media Center. The conference will be led by Jason Henry, CEO of the Well. The event is free and open to the public. A few of the items of discussion include what motivates social class values and behaviors. How middle-class systems and structures clash with those living in poverty and poverty’s generational impact on families.

The Indianola High School softball team participated in the annual “Strike Out Cancer” game against rival Southeast Polk last week, a longstanding tradition to raise funds, awareness, and to support those around the programs who have been affected by cancer. Head coach Stacy Evans tells KNIA News the annual game has honored many former players and coaches who have been affected by cancer, and presents an opportunity to come together as a community.

In Des Moines, the #4 in 2A Pella girls soccer team is making their 14th ever state tournament appearance, starting against 5th seeded ADM Wednesday. That match can be heard on 92.1 KRLS, with pregame at 12:15 p.m.

The #4 Pella girls soccer team defeated the 5th seeded ADM Tigers 1-0 Wednesday afternoon at the Class 2A state soccer tournament. While the teams played to a draw for most of the first half, older sister Mia had a long-range assist to younger sister Abby with :19 before the halftime break. It was the only goal the Dutch defense needed. Haley Van Houweling finished with 14 saves. Pella next takes on #1 Waverly-Shell Rock this Friday at 12:30 p.m.; pregame starts at high noon on 92.1 KRLS.

Norwalk soccer boys battle Hoover in 3A state semifinals; Warrior baseball and softball teams win 3 of 4 at Oskaloosa

The 2023 season ended with a trophy for the Pella girls tennis team. Pella placed 4th during Tuesday’s semifinals and finals matches, falling 5-0 to eventual champions Waterloo Columbus and in a hard-fought back and forth with Central DeWitt 5-4, which included two third-set tiebreakers the Dutch ended up losing — including the final doubles match with the 3rd place trophy on the line. Wins for Pella came from Emily Blom, Alloree Else, and Bryn Higginbotham in singles, and Claire Smock fell in one of the two tiebreakers. Mallory Westerkamp and Bryn Higginbotham were able to win the fourth match for Pella, but the match came down to #1 singles after Smock/Blom fell in their doubles match. Else and Lily VanDusseldorp held a slim lead in the first set, but couldn’t manage to close it out, losing 5-7. The second set was a decisive 6-3 victory for the Dutch. With all other matches finished, the meet was decided in a match tiebreak that went the way of the Sabers.
