Coal Miner’s Day is always a big event for the history of the town of Melcher-Dallas. The Coal Miner’s Museum will be open from noon until 4 p.m. Saturday, June 24. The 2023 event will be a two-day affair that honors the past and provides some fun activities for this year. The event is June 23 and 24. The Friday portion of the event will include music in the park starting at 5 p.m. along with some inflatables. There will also be a bags tournament in the park starting at 6:30 p.m.

Big Rock Park Adds Colorful Exploration

A pair of special performers are coming to Pella on Saturday, July 1st, and will take part in festivities related to Independence Day in the Tulip City. American Legion Post 89 Commander David Robbins says the Iowa Veterans Band will start festivities on the Tulip Toren that afternoon at 2 p.m., followed by the 34th Army Band based out of Fairfield. Robbins says both will bring unique performances and a wide range of music to the stage. The appearance of both military bands was the main reason why the City of Pella ultimately decided to move festivities for Independence Day from July 4th to the Saturday before. The Jefferson Highway Association hosted a special event in Indianola Monday, as the “Sociability Caravan” that travels through historic areas of the Jefferson Highway traveled through Indianola. The Jefferson Highway began in Iowa in the early 1910’s as the first north/south highway in the country that linked Canada to Louisiana.

The Indianola City Council discussed parking on the downtown square during their work session Monday, which included both short-term and long-term solutions. City Manager Ben Reeves tells KNIA News the city is committed to supporting local businesses on the square, and in the short-term will have signs on the square and raise awareness about the need for open spots on the square. Reeves said the potential long-term options involve a parking time-limit enforcement.

Funeral services will be held for Carl D. Horman age 92 of Pella on Tuesday, June 13th at 10:30am at the Trinity Reformed Church in Pella. Burial will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery in Pella. Visitation will begin after 2:00pm Monday at the Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home where the family will be present Monday from 4:00-6:00pm. The Pella City Council held a public hearing at their meeting Tuesday evening for construction bids to begin the process of converting overhead power lines underground along Idaho Drive. A contract was approved with Murphy Tower Service for $636,000 for installation of underground conduit. The council also accepted final improvements for the 250th Avenue road reconstruction project, approved a resolution to partner with Pella Historical Society for the upgrades to the downtown speaker system for up to $154,652 in funding, and moved forward with a special event permit for the Pella All Original Music Showcase on Saturday, September 16th. During policy and planning following regular business, the council discussed health and dental plan premiums for the upcoming fiscal year and had a brief review of the city’s peddler permit policies.

The class 3A #3 Knoxville Baseball Squad was stung with its first loss of the season on Tuesday night as Gilbert largely dominated the game 11-2 as heard live on 95.3 KNIA. The Panthers jumped on top in the 1st inning with two runs but could get nothing after as Gilbert’s pitching staff silenced the Panther bats. Senior players Beau Leisure and Luke Spaur told KNIA/KRLS Sports it was not their night but they will learn from their first loss of the season.

Funeral services for Thelma JoAnn Stull, 88, will be Saturday, June 10th, at 10:30 a.m. at the Dallas Christian Church in Melcher-Dallas. Interment will be at the Dallas Cemetery following the service. A luncheon will be served at the church following the burial. Family will receive friends on Friday, June 9th, from 4-6 p.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Melcher-Dallas. Memorials may be made to the Dallas Christian Church, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospitals or the Melcher-Dallas Fire and Rescue.
