Gentlemen, start your tortoises. The Indianapolis Zoo is hosting its 45th annual Zoopolis 500, the "greatest spectacle in tortoise racing," before the Indy 500. Here's what to know about the cutest, slowest race happening in Indianapolis this week.

When and where is the Zoopolis 500?

The Zoopolis 500 happens Wednesday, May 22, at the Indianapolis Zoo, 1200 W Washington St., under the Bicentennial Pavilion. Festivities begin 10 a.m., according to a news release, and the American Dairy Association of Indiana will hand out free chocolate milk to guests. An Indy 500 pace car will be parked nearby for those who want to snap a photo.

What time does the tortoise race at the Indianapolis Zoo begin?

The Zoopolis 500 begins 11:15 a.m., hosted by tortoise experts from the Zoo as well as Indycar Communications VP Dave Furst, who will serve as emcee. According to a news release, past Indy 500 champions Tony Kanaan and Alexander Rossi will act as grand marshals for the event.

At 11:30 a.m., the green flag will be waved and fans can cheer on their favorite tortoise as they "speed" down the track, organizers said, for a trophy of fresh fruits provided by Kroger at the finish line.

Animal care staff from the Indianapolis Zoo will be on hand after the race to answer guest's questions about tortoises.

How to get tickets to Zoopolis 500

The race is free to watch for zoo members and included with general admission tickets. Visitors, zoo officials said, are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance at IndianapolisZoo.com.

How much does it cost to get into the Indianapolis Zoo?

Zoo admission for Wednesday, May 22, 2024, was listed online at $26.75 per adult ticket, $24.75 for military and seniors, and $22.75 for children ages 2-12, according to the zoo's website. Ticket prices are subject to change so be sure to check the website, which advertises a reduced price in the cost of tickets for those who buy them online.

When is the Indianapolis Zoo open?

On the week of the race, the Indianapolis Zoo will be open 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday - Thursday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday - Sunday. Check the zoo's official website for updated hours during special events.
