INDIANAPOLIS —  One person is dead, and two others are hospitalized after a crash involving seven vehicles on I-70 eastbound.

The Indiana State Police Dispatch Center began receiving calls about a serious multi-vehicle crash in the eastbound lanes of I-70 two miles west of the Plainfield exit at 12:05 p.m.

Upon arrival, officials located several severely damaged vehicles, one of which was upside down and fully engulfed in flames.

As the Plainfield Fire Department extinguished the flames, they located the driver who was entrapped in the wreckage. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

ISP says first responders found two other individuals requiring medical care who were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Three semi-tractor trailers and four passenger vehicles were involved in the crash.

According to ISP, the crash closed the eastbound lanes of I-70 for nearly six hours while the crash was investigated, and the wreckage was removed.

Preliminary investigation determined traffic was backed up from a minor crash on the side of the interstate just west of the crash scene.

Police say as traffic backed up, the driver of a semi-tractor trailer failed to stop in time and hit the back of stopped traffic. Two vehicles rolled over and several other vehicles received heavy damage.

Police do not believe alcohol or drugs are a contributing factor in the crash.

The crash is still under investigation by ISP. The Hendricks County Coroner responded to the scene and has identified the deceased. The identity will be released once the family is notified.

Crash investigators are still on the scene. One eastbound lane is open currently.
