Matt Ryan joining CBS Sports after Colts release: ‘Not a retirement post’

Matt Ryan is moving from the field to the studio this upcoming NFL season.

The former Colts quarterback announced Monday on social media he’s joining CBS Sports as an NFL analyst — but clarified, “This is not a retirement post.”

“Excited to join the @NFLonCBS family! Looking forward to breaking down the game this season,” Ryan tweeted.

Ryan was released by the Colts in March after one season in Indianapolis, with the team clearing $17 million in the process.

However, he still owed $12 million in relation to his base salary in 2023, according to ESPN, which is likely behind the curious phrasing of Ryan’s career-altering message.

As part of his new endeavor, the 37-year-old Ryan will be an analyst for select “NFL on CBS” games and will offer analysis on “The NFL Today,” “That Other Pregame Show (TOPS),” “NFL Monday QB,” and CBS Sports HQ.

“It is truly an honor to join this exceptional team at CBS Sports,” Ryan said in a separate statement Monday.

“I have been blessed to have incredible teammates throughout my career and I am fortunate that will continue here working with and learning from the very best in the industry.”

Ryan, the third overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, spent the first 14 years of his career with the Atlanta Falcons.

He was named the league’s MVP for the 2016 season, the same year the Falcons reached the Super Bowl and lost to the New England Patriots after blowing a 28-3 lead.

Ryan was traded to the Colts in March 2022.

Though Indianapolis provided a fresh start for Ryan, the team stumbled out of the gate and saw the firing of head coach Frank Reich in November as the Colts stood at 3-5-1.

Then, the team bizarrely hired former Colts center Jeff Saturday as Reich’s interim replacement, despite having zero coaching experience at the college or NFL levels.

Ryan threw for 3,057 yards, 14 touchdowns and 13 interceptions through 12 regular-season games with the Colts.

It’s been a whirlwind few weeks for Ryan, who recently welcomed his third child with wife Sarah.

Son Cal Patrick became the newest member of the Ryan family, joining 5-year-old twins John Matthew and Marshall Thomas.
