The team was a big-time disappointment this past season. The Indianapolis Colts look to bounce back in 2023. So can the team find a reliable quarterback?

Many considered the Indianapolis Colts the favorite to win the AFC South this past season. Despite the fact that the team that highly-regarded defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus would leave to become the head coach of the Chicago Bears, the Colts had a solid roster and had picked up veteran quarterback Matt Ryan for a third-round draft choice.

The team could not get out of its own way. Head coach Frank Reich was replaced by Jeff Saturday during the season. He won his debut at Las Vegas, but the club would close out the season with seven straight losses. Enter new head coach Shane Steichen, late of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Colts draft picks 2023

As of this writing (and who knows if general manager Chris Ballard and the Colts will look to trade up), Indianapolis has a total of nine picks in April’s draft.

  • Round 1: 4th overall
  • Round 2: 35th overall
  • Round 3: 79th overall
  • Round 4: 106th overall
  • Round 5: 138th overall
  • Round 5: 162nd overall
  • Round 5: 176th overall
  • Round 6: None
  • Round 7: 221st overall
  • Round 7: 236th overall

Ballard has done plenty of wheeling and dealing over the last year. The Colts don’t have their own third-round pick but own the Commanders via last year’s trade for Carson Wentz. The team owns three fifth-round picks after trading running back Nyheim Hines to Buffalo last year and sending cornerback Stephon Gilmore to the Dallas Cowboys in March.

Colts draft needs 2023

Not surprisingly, the Colts’ biggest needs – courtesy of Pro Football Focus (subscription required) – are on the offensive side of the ball. Only the Denver Broncos scored fewer points in the NFL in 2022. Indianapolis’ offensive unit scored only 25 touchdowns and the team led the league with 34 turnovers.

  1. Quarterback
  2. Wide receiver
  3. Tight end
  4. Tackle
  5. Guard

General manager Chris Ballard has struggled mightily to fill the shoes of Andrew Luck. With the offseason release of veteran Matt Ryan, the club will have a different Week 1 starter behind center for the seventh consecutive year.

One of the team’s free-agent additions in March is former Jaguars’ and Eagles’ quarterback Gardner Minshew. Nick Foles and Sam Ehlinger, both who started games for the team in 2022, are still on the roster as well.

Along with quarterback, help at wideout is needed. Isaiah McKenzie was picked up after being released by the Bills, but Parris Campbell signed with the New York Giants.
