Yesterday was the second day of racing at the 2023 Indianapolis Speedo Sectionals. Highlighting last night’s action was Olympian Drew Kibler, who threw down the fastest 200-meter freestyle time in the world this year at 1:45.82. Kibler’s been on fire this weekend, having also set a personal best and meet record in the 50m freestyle the day before (22.23)

Aaron Shackell from Carmel also had a fantastic swim to finish 2nd behind Kibler in the 200 free. Shackell, a Cal commit, took off over three seconds from his previous best to touch at 1:47.70.

There was a tight race in the women’s 200 free between 15-year-old Lynsey Bowen from Carmel and 17-year-old Lainy Kruger from the Northern Kentucky Clippers. Bowen held the advantage at the 100 mark with a 58.05, while Kruger flipped at 59.30. Kruger put together a strong back half, but Bowen held her off to touch first at 2:00.18. Kruger finished just behind, logging a 2:00.58. Both Kruger and Bowen shaved over two seconds off their previous bests, and notched Olympic Trial qualifying times.

16-year-old Alex Shackell from Carmel won the women’s 100 fly in a 58.43, which is just a tenth off her personal best from Junior Nationals this summer. 15-year-old Charlotte Crush joined Shackell under the minute-barrier, as she clocked 59.51 to take 2nd. Crush’s swim marks a personal by a about half a second, with her previous being done at the International Team Trials last April.

Daniel Diehl logged a personal best time in the men’s 100 fly to win the event in 53.03. His swim, which is about a half second drop, moves him to 32nd on the all-time top-100 list for 17-18 boys. Finishing behind Diehl was Will Modglin, who also shaved off a few tenths from his own personal best. Modglin recorded a 53.51, hitting an Olympic Trials qualifying time also.

15-year-old Kayla Han from La Mirada Armada dominated the women’s 400 IM race. Han won by nearly five seconds, stopping the clock at 4:43.80. Though not a best time, Han secured her Olympic Trials cut in the event as her previous best was done before the window opened. Sofia Plaza from SwimMac picked up 2nd with a best time of 4:48.33, also dipping below the Olympic Trials cut.

UIndy swimmer Cedric Buessing topped the men’s 400 IM with a best time of 4:23.49, narrowly beating Josh Parent from Bluefish Swim Club (4:23.87). Buessing took over only in the final 50, as he closed in 28.91 while Parent split a 29.85.

Carmel ‘A’ team of  Lexie Ward (58.85), Bowen (56.76), Molly Sweeney (57.63), and Shackell (54.45) ended the evening with a meet record in the women’s 400 freestyle relay. They combined for a 3:47.69, which lowers Carmel’s previous record from 2014 by half a second. Shackell logged the fastest split of the field at 54.45, which is 0.03 quicker she swam on the anchor leg for Team USA at Junior Pacs.

On the men’s side, Carmel’s team of Kibler (48.95), Andrew Shackell (53.38), Aaron Shackell (50.37), and Gregg Enoch (51.07) finished with a 3:24.40 to top SwimMac by just under four. seconds. Kibler was the only athlete in the field to break 50-seconds, and put him less than a second off his own best time of 48.25.
