INDIANAPOLIS – Police are investigating after a man was killed and another man was injured in an interstate shooting and a single-car crash early Saturday morning on Indy’s east side.

Indiana State Police identified the man who was killed as 30-year-old Anthony Shelman Jr. of Indianapolis. The wounded man was only identified as a 35-year-old passenger.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers were called to the intersection of East 20th Street & North Emerson Ave for a report of an inverted vehicle crash just after 3:30 a.m.

When officers arrived, they located the two men who had been shot inside the vehicle.

Shelman, who was the driver, was critically injured. He was taken to the hospital where he later died.

The passenger was “awake and breathing” and was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

Officers learned the shooting possibly happened on I-70 before the crash and the investigation was turned over to Indiana State Police.

Detectives are still working to find a motive for the shooting and to identify where the exact location of the shooting took place.

Police believe people in another vehicle shot multiple times at Shelman and the passenger while they were driving near I-70 and Emerson Avenue.

Shortly after the shooting, their car crashed near East 20th Street and North Emerson Avenue.

ISP detectives have not determined if this shooting was road rage related or targeted.

This is the 11th interstate shooting in the Indianapolis area this year, according to ISP. Additionally, ISP troopers have investigated 53 incidents of road rage where a gun was displayed or pointed but no shots were fired.
