INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis Metro police are investigating after a man was shot and killed on the city’s south side.

IMPD said officers were called around 3:05 p.m. Friday afternoon to the 3400 block of Meridian Street for a person shot. This is a residential area near the intersection of Meridian and W. Sumner Avenue.

Upon arrival, IMPD said officers found an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound outside of a residence. That man, IMPD said around 3:30 p.m., was listed in critical condition. Around 3:50 p.m., IMPD said his condition was changed to ‘extremely critical’.

At 4:10 p.m., IMPD announced that the man had been pronounced dead. He was later identified as 53-year-old Brian Scott Williams.

Neighbors say with crime increasing in the area they are considering moving.

“People get killed and I can just say somebody has been killed there. Drive another block, somebody has been killed there. Three people were killed down here,” said one neighbor.

IMPD Lt. Shane Foley said on scene that homicide detectives have identified a person of interest and are working to determine what role that person played in the shooting.

“Anybody who was in the area who might have any video surveillance footage of anything that was suspicious is asked to contact the IMPD Homicide Office” said Foley.

That number for the homicide office is (317) 327-3475. Foley says police and the public need to work together.

“Disturbances, disputes that happen between individuals – police can’t stop all of those. We can’t be everywhere. So there’s a greater responsibility from people in the community to step up and help prevent some of these things from taking place,” said Foley.
