Earlier this month, the Baltimore Ravens placed a non-exclusive franchise tag on star quarterback Lamar Jackson which allowed all teams throughout the league to negotiate with the former MVP quarterback. So far, it does not appear that any team has expressed interest. But according to a recent report, one team hasn’t ruled it out.
According to a report from Stephen Holder of ESPN, the Indianapolis Colts “did not rule out” having discussions with Lamar Jackson as the team continues to try to improve its quarterback situation for the future.
“Indianapolis did not rule out having discussions with Jackson, according to a team source. However, the club has not taken any substantive steps regarding Jackson and it is unclear whether it intends to do so. Team sources have expressed skepticism about pursuing Jackson,” Stephen Holder.
This is a pretty massive update, especially given how many teams have publically or privately expressed that they have no interest in pursuing Jackson. As a result, the NFL world had plenty to say about it on Twitter.
No brainer for the Colts…there is no way Richardson or Levis will be better then Lamar Jackson…They are probably taking a QB at 1 anyway so the 2023 pick is a wash. https://t.co/Ex7X50qb6W

I mean, it's made very clear that it will cost two first round picks. But, to me, who cares? The Colts spent a first and third on Carson Wentz! lol

Wouldn’t it make sense for any team signing Jackson to an offer sheet to trade back in 1st round as far as they could first? So they get some compensation from that pick then the one they give up for this year would be lower?

Part of this is fascinating as well, because I think the biggest question is going to be in terms of the quality of quarterback versus the cost.
IND might need to trade up to 3 anyway for a QB and if that’s the case why not a bit more for Lamar?
But a rookie QB contract… https://t.co/6vMgUVms7o

Lamar to the Colts would be a massive L https://t.co/Hu6YuOgOSd

Holder made it quite clear that many within the Colts organization are skeptical that it would actually happen, but it’s still an interesting update nonetheless. We’ll have to see how it plays out.
