Inmates overdose after taking illegal drug inside Imperial County Jail

The Imperial County Sheriff's Office said they are not sure what kind of drug it was

IMPERIAL COUNTY, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - At least nine inmates who were in their jail cells overdosed Wednesday night and Thursday morning after deputies said they believe the inmates took an illegal drug; one inmate died Thursday morning.

According to the Imperial County Sheriff's Office (ICSO), the staff in the Imperial County Jail found eight inmates feeling sick and nauseous.

The staff was able to help assist the inmates.

The inmates were taken to two local hospitals. Three of them were taken for precautionary medical measures.

ICSO said the inmates were in stable condition before leaving the jail and have been released from the hospital.

Then according to ICSO, an inmate was found unresponsive in his jail cell Thursday at 6:50 a.m.

The 33-year-old man was pronounced dead at a local hospital, said ICSO.

ICSO mentioned that the inmates were exposed to an illegal drug but it is not known what type of drug at this time.
